The Challenge
Musgrave wanted to create a new loyalty experience for Centra customers in the Republic of Ireland — one that went far beyond a simple digital card.
The new My Centra app needed to bring together a wide range of customer benefits, including app-only offers, member pricing, food-to-go bundle deals, digital stamp cards, vouchers and rewards. It also needed to support the popular Frank & Honest coffee loyalty experience, while expanding the proposition into a much broader Centra loyalty programme.
For customers, the app had to feel simple, fast and reliable. For Musgrave, it needed to integrate securely with a complex retail technology ecosystem, handle high user volumes, support real-time engagement and remain robust in real-world mobile conditions, including poor reception, offline use and service errors.
Laposa’s experience with similar loyalty products, including the SuperValu Real Rewards mobile app, gave us a strong foundation to build from. We understood the practical demands of retail loyalty: account registration, vouchers, reward state, consent, auditability, in-store scanning and customer expectations at the till.
The Solution
Laposa developed the My Centra mobile app using React Native and TypeScript, enabling a shared, maintainable codebase across iOS and Android while delivering a smooth native mobile experience.
The app gives Centra customers access to a wide range of loyalty features, including:
- Digital Coffee Collector for Frank & Honest Coffee, Tea and Iced products
- Buy 6, get your 7th free coffee reward tracking
- Exclusive app-only offers and weekly member savings
- My Centra member pricing on selected products in-store
- Food-to-go bundle deals, available only in the app
- Digital stamp cards and rewards on Centra favourites
- Vouchers and loyalty rewards, including new member incentives
- Automatic progress tracking when customers scan the app at the till
The goal was to make loyalty feel effortless: customers scan their app, collect rewards and receive value every time they shop.
Designed for real-world retail conditions
A loyalty app is often used in busy stores, at checkout, on mobile networks and under time pressure. Reliability was therefore a major technical priority.
Laposa implemented advanced error and offline handling so the app could respond appropriately to different connection scenarios, including:
- When the device is fully offline
- When mobile reception is poor and API calls time out
- When a backend service is unavailable or returns an invalid response
The app was designed to fail safely. For example, if a connection issue occurs during login or registration before a user is fully authenticated, the app removes the incomplete session and returns the user to the initial screen with a clear error message.
For logged-in users, the app can continue to show cached content where appropriate, while clearly communicating any temporary issue. This helps preserve the user experience and reduces confusion when connectivity is limited.
Secure login, consent and account management
The My Centra app includes secure login and registration using OIDC and integrates with Musgrave’s identity infrastructure, supported by Akamai Identity Cloud.
The identity layer supports important account features such as:
- Login and registration
- Password reset flows
- Session management
- Consent management
- Custom branding and editable UI text
- Secure token handling
A dedicated encrypted session and token database was used to extend session functionality while ensuring no personally identifiable information was stored in that layer.
Scalable architecture and integrations
The app connects into Musgrave’s wider digital ecosystem through a modern, cloud-based architecture.
At a high level, the mobile app communicates with backend services through a Kong API Gateway, with services deployed within Musgrave’s Azure Kubernetes Service environment. This provides a secure and observable gateway for routing mobile traffic to the correct backend services.
Key integrations and services include:
- Mobile API for app content, loyalty features, vouchers, rewards, stamp cards, receipts and wallet-related functionality
- Identity API for account, login, registration and consent flows
- Audit Log API for traceability of loyalty actions and system events
- PromoPay Loyalty API for vouchers, coupons, offers and stamp cards
- Contentful for content management and dynamic app content
- Contentful CDN for fast delivery of images and media assets
- Airship for push notifications and in-app messaging
- AppDynamics and Embrace (OpenTelemetry) for runtime app performance monitoring
- Microsoft Clarity for user experience insights
- DataDog for backend log collection and troubleshooting
- SMTP mail service for Contact Us form submissions
This architecture gives Musgrave the flexibility to manage content, campaigns and loyalty mechanics without requiring constant app releases.
Real-time reward engagement
A key part of the My Centra experience is timely customer engagement. When customers earn vouchers or rewards, the app can notify them quickly, helping to close the loop between in-store behaviour and digital reward.
This is especially important for loyalty products: customers need to trust that their actions — scanning, collecting stamps, redeeming offers — are reflected accurately and promptly in the app.
By combining loyalty APIs, push messaging and robust app state handling, My Centra delivers a more immediate and rewarding customer experience.
Building on the Frank & Honest experience
Before My Centra, customers were already familiar with Frank & Honest digital loyalty functionality. The new app needed to operate in that existing landscape while taking over and significantly expanding the feature set.
My Centra now brings the coffee collector experience together with a broader loyalty programme, giving customers one place to access coffee rewards, member-only offers, vouchers, stamp cards and exclusive Centra value.
This transition required careful attention to user expectations, data flows and feature continuity.
Results

My Centra reached the top position on the Apple App Store, giving the launch outstanding visibility and validating the quality of the digital experience.
Over 100k iOS first-time downloads
In the first month after release, the app achieved over 100,000 first-time downloads from the Apple App Store, demonstrating immediate customer demand and strong launch momentum.
80k+ Google Play installs
Android adoption was equally strong, with over 80,000 Google Play installs in the first month after release, extending the app’s reach across a broad customer base.
Over 30k daily unique users
Beyond initial downloads, My Centra attracted over 28,000 daily unique users, showing that the app delivered ongoing value and became part of customers’ everyday shopping routine.
